Course description:Two courses will be introduced in Fall 2017 at U-M. I want to find out if any of you are intrested in enrolling into this min-course along with the major course on Chinese Contemporary Art, 3-credit, offered by Stamps and Art History. This min-course , 1.5 hours one week, will focus on 50 women artists in China. Over the last four decadesafter its economic reform initiated in 1978, China has underse gone immensesocial, political and,cultural turbulence. Artists, writers, photographers, musicians as well as philosophers and filmmakers have captured interesting provocativemoments and weaved the observations into their episodes of creativity. Manysignificant landmark art works and films have been created and shown worldwidewhich help people from different cultures to know China and its women artistsin depth.
During these mind-blogging transformations, China changes itself from the onset inregard to its urban landscape concerns as well as its cultural motifs presentedapparently in the artists’ endeavors. The instructor wants to introduce anextensive perspective to look into the women creativity in the complex contextof art and architecture, art and activism, art and progressiveness inside Chinaas well as counter-balances in the realm of cross-cultural influences from the globalsociety.
This issue needs to be addressed for women creators, like what does contemporary artmean at different trajectories of history for women writers/artists, inrelation to personal growth, political turbulence, intellectual history, socialactivism, cultural influence in the maxi-arenas of globalization, urbanizationand commercialization?
